Hello,
i am a business economics student and will try to explain it to you. I may make a mistake or two since i don’t really have practical experience in either marketing or the hospitality industry.
Marketing comprises 4 parts : Product (or Service in the case of the hospitality industry), Price, Distribution and Communication. Sales is just a part of Marketing.
If you own a hotel your service includes the hospitality of the employees, the coziness of the rooms, the quality of the food, the location, vicinity of interesting places, etc.
You determine the Price considering the costs of delivering the service (salaries, interest payments for the building etc.) but there are also several psychological aspects to price.
Communication refers to how you get potential customers to know about your hotel-or the advertisements.
Distribution is the part that is linked directly with Sales. It means that you determine where the service/product will be sold – in tourist agencies for example.

But you can also look at it from a different angle – what is the difference in the work of the people in the marketing and the sales team? The main difference is that the marketing people create an experience that comes with the product/service, and the sales team are concerned more with getting the product directly to the shops and the customers and influence a purchase.
The experience in a hotel may be created and emphasized by the the fact that it’s nearby the beach, it is in a natural setting, it is quiet, the design of the interior is a certain way, the employees have a certain attitude and so on. The experience would be designed by a marketing team. The sales team would make sure that the travel agencies include your hotel in their vacation offers. They are the ones who communicate regularly with customers or representors of customers (the travel agency) until you sell the service.
Hope it is helpful. The article in the “source” below is useful too.

Very briefly

Marketing is creating the need.

Sales is fullfilling the need

It doesn’t matter what industry you are in because the final result is the same – you are marketing a product to sell. I am a Marketing Executive and basically I find out if people will be interested in finding out more about our product and when I get them interested the Sales Executive then goes on and tries to sells the product to the customer. Four rules in Sales & Marketing.1) Marketing, who you are. 2) Marketing who the company is 3) Marketing the product 4) Sales, do they want to buy it.
