you can download AVG internet security from download .com.It’s very efficient and provides you protection against all types of viruses, worms, malware and spywares.

it’s the best you can have..but don’t forget to update it regularly after the download

Everybody is going to have a different answer of course. I like using Nod32 for antivirus protection. Reasons why is cause I have NEVER had a virus get by it and secondly it uses little system resources. Having an older computer myself you do not want to slow down the computer anymore than what it already may be by todays standards.
I use Windows Defender for spyware. So far both have been good for me with no problems. Although I use common sense also when browsing and downloading. That is still the best prevention there is, just by looking at certain names of a site can pretty much tell you to stay away from them.
The other thing with having any antivirus program is none are 100% sure to find or stop all virus’s. Only about 50-70% of virus’s are usually found until they have a virus definition update for the program.
Malware is pretty much taken care of also by Microsoft if using Internet Explorer. They usually have a new update once a month for that.

You need at least antivirus and anti spyware. Additional software is optional.

Anti virus
[1] (8.7MB)
or
[2] (16.0MB)
or
[3] (8.8MB)

Spyware protection
[1] ( 6.4MB)
and
[2] (2.3MB)

Firewall
[1] (7.3MB)
or
[2] (8MB)
or
[3][ (2.7MB)

Trojan scanner/remover
[1] (6.17MB)
[2] (13.2MB)

Rootkit scanner/remover
[1] Freeware, Windows 2K, XP.353KB
[2] Freeware, All Windows, 231KB

Prevention & detection – malware
[1] Freeware, Windows 2000 SP4 -> Vista, 13.9 MB
[2] Free for personal use,Win2K and later 26.7MB

It is possible to use an ‘all in one’ utility like norton or mcafee but these systems are not free and they can slow down your system.

Hope this helps.

windows defender and firewalls are already installed on your new PC, warning..install anti-virus software will slow down your PC, self monitor for infections yourself, if your programs don’t work just reinstall them

Download updates from Microsoft – especially security updates . Even the best anti-virus and firewalls cant stop a hacker from exploiting a vulnerability in your software .

All Free makes for a decent combo

Firewall –
Anti-Spyware -
Antivirus -
