Would “Sandboxing” the browser be sufficient for basic internet protection?

I’m an IS security student and trying to give advice on low-cost/low-resource solutions for basic internet protection for a friend, who has a very old computer (think 256Mb RAM). Would automatically “sandboxing” the web browser and teaching her to delete the sanbox occasionally be enough for basic protection? Again, due to cost and technical constraints, traditional software solutions like Firewalls and AV suits are not reasonable. While I understand there are some holes in the logic, are there any major flaws with this idea?
Thanks

You still need a firewall, to stop internet based attacks. This would also mean your friend would not be able to download anything off the internet. That being the case, there’s not much that will get passed a sandbox. Anti-virus software is often by passed, but I’ve never had anything get passed my sandbox. The sandbox should be set up to delete everything in it when the browser is closed. The free version of Avira anti-virus runs very light and would be a good thing to add.
